This is a picture of the festival. As you can see many people are on their camels watching the concert. They are on their camels because they are about to start the camel race!
Who was involved?
African musicians like Amira Kheir, Koudede, and an amazing tribute to Ali Farka Toure. And for USA music U2 lead singer Bono was there to play a couple of songs. Also international star Tinariwen made it to the 3 day concert.
Where/When did it take place?
In Mali, Africa, found in all the hemispheres, the "Festival au Desert" took place. A few miles away from Timbuktu right in the Sahara Desert. On Thursday February 2, 2012 the amazing concert was held.
What happened?
This concert was held extra special for the remembrence of the 3 tourists who were kidnapped in January. Most of the amazing stars where "homegrown" (they were born and still live in Africa) they were all there to represent their continent. The local Tuareg groupTartit were there for the whole concert. The group was formed by a group of refugee women that started it in 1995. They have a song called "Democracy" was made for the spirit of the festival.
Why did it happen?
The concert was inspired by the traditional meetings of the region's Tuareg nomads. The tradition has been enjoyed since 2001, and alot of good musicians got their big break performing at the gathering, Right in the Sahara desert the amazing concert was held. Many came to watch/hear the beautiful sounds bursting in the Sahara.
My opinion
I would have thought that that oppertunity would have been exilerating to be at that festival. To hear different types of music from different points of view and different cultures. The foods and clothes would be fun to try and look at! The whole festival looks like a party that goes on for 3 days!!!
Extra
Foods form all different parts of Africa and Europe are found at the festival. You can also learn millions of African dances from all over the continent. There are litteraly 50 countries and for every country there is one or more dances. The festival also includes camel racing, where you can bring your very own camel and see if you can ride your camel to the finish line.
