When did this Happen?
Going on for a while, 448 rhinos killed in 2011.
What happened?
Rhino's are being poached for their horns. The Rhino and Lion Nature Rescue is trying to put a stop to the poaching. The first method is to sedate the rhinos and inject a neon pink dye into their horns. This dye can be detected with airport security devices and poachers can be found. The second method is to sedate the rhinos and apply an insecticide into their horns. When the horns are sold and made into a powder, the insecticide can make humans ill. They are hoping these methods will reduce the poaching of rhinos. Sadly there is a problem with the sedation. One out of fifty rhinos die during the sedation process.
Why is this happening?
Increase in demand for rhino horns is coming from the Asian middle class. Rhino horns are thought to have healing properties. This has not been scientifically proven at this time.
My opinion
My opinion is that where rhinos live they sould have a NO POACHING law. I feel that creating a no poaching law would solve the problem better then risking their lives with dyes and insecticides. Also the demand for rhino horns could be reduced if people had better medical options.
