There was a couple gunmen hanging around the Ertale volcano in the afar region and saw the tourists and shot at them.
the tourists who died were
2 Germans, 2 Hungrians, 1 Austrian
When the gunmen stopped firing there was 5 people dead, some were wounded.

This whole event took place in one area. It is in Ethiopia and is near the border to Eritrea. it is known as the Afar region. the gun men grossed the border from Eritrea to Ethiopia illegaly. Ethiopia is on the continent of Africa and in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres.

On a normal day in Ethiopia some tourist from all differnt places came on a vacation. it was January 16th, 2011.

there was many tourists just hanging with each other minding there own businnes when they were attacked by gunmen.
when the police heard they sent defence forces to help them get to a hospital. since 2 german tourists were killed in the attack german goverment formed a crisis team to investigate. there was a third german but he mysteriously disapered from the site. there was a total of 12 people saved from the attack from helicopter. The embassy in Ethiopia is also helping out with the situation.

this happened for a specific reason. there was an Austrian in the group of tourists. Austria has a warning in this area since 2007 so when the gunmen noticed the Austrian attacked. there has been several attacks against Austrian tourists over the past several years.
the gunmen were just in the afar region near the volcano because they thought they would be safe there since they crossed the border from Eritrea. they saw the tourists who were looking at the volcano so they shot at them.
MY PERSONAL OPINION OF THE EVENT
I think this was completely unnecessary to shoot at all the tourists because of an Austrian. I also think that Austrians should be allowed in the region because they really don't have a reason to forbid them from coming.
